Iphone help with getting on iphone menu?

i bought a new iphone off a guy and when i hooked it up on itunes its says that i had to restore the iphone in order to be accustomed to my computers/ music and my itunes. So when the process completed and i inserted my sim card it says there is no sim card and that the sim Card is not supported by the iphone. I cannot even get onto the menu to start up the iphone. Does anyone know if there is a way to bypass the iphone without buying a turbo sim card. Please help!!!!
