I have this problem too. Just started. I’ve bought over 150 apps, with little problem until today.
I am hoping this isn’t some kind of hack attempt to get hold of all the extra cards we enter all the vital info for.
Until they address this issue, I’m afraid I’ll be quite tentative about entering more cards information, but I can certainly do without buying more apps for awhile (above lol).
Still, it won’t even let me update the apps I already purchased. THAT, is ultimately quite irritating as well as aggravating.

“I hear” that it’s bc of all the new iPhone users on the servers. Which is causing problems..

This is major bs, the nearest apple store is a half hour away in good traffic, is it really worth driving out there I wonder? Anyone know if you can call and get it fixed over the phone?

Same thing here. I purchased some songs from Itunes and downloaded some paid apps, then about an hour later I tried to download a free app and got the security is invalid. I knew my credit card was good and that it was the correct security code. The problem turned out to be that I ordered alot of stuff on that same CC and used it alot that day that they put an alert on it. The pple store said I had a balance of 9.34 so I just drove to Walgreens and bought a $25 Itunes gift card punched in the code on my Iphone and everything was fine. The bank called me a few hours later and said that their has been alot of activity on my card and they had to confirm I made those purchases and I explained it was me. They did say that this happens alot with Apple, so you might want to check it out. Hope this helps.

Keeps happening to me too. I try to buy something, and it says cannont purchase item please sign in to continue. It takes me to my credit card settings, and says to sign in again. I type in my security code for my DEBIT CARD (not pin code for accessing ipod) and it doesnt work saying its invalid. Is this a good description to help others with answering this question?

I hope you don’t mean the iPod code because after so many failed attempts, you’ll be locked out. It’s probably referring to the passcode for your wireless network.
More than likely you are inquiring about something similar to a Product ID # which would have been issued to you specifically upon purchase of your iPod.
Apple is quite serious about security issues.
Your best route for remedy would be to contact the nearest Authrised Service Provider or Apple Store in your area.
You will need to demonstrate that you legitimately purchased the product.
That proof should not be too difficult even if the iPod was a gift, since Apple keeps tight records relating to such matters.
If necessary, you can make a start here: http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
