A Question for those who have an UNLOCKED iPhone! ?

I have an original iphone that i want to get unlocked for my hubby as i upgraded to the new 3G iPhone. What i want to know is, if it is unlocked, does itunes allow iphone to play the music & films etc transfered? At the moment its not unlocked & there isnt a sim in it but even tho i can transfer purchases etc to the iphone, it wont allow me to play them coz there is no sim. It doesnt seem to work just as an ipod!! Just wondered if the same would happen when it was unlocked and a different network sim card was in it?
