How do I unlock and Iphone with a tmobile sim card?

I have no way of getting an at&t sim card. Its the first generation of the iphones and I have it at the point where it will make emergency calls and receive texts but nothing elce. My husband and I have spent the last three days looking online for ways to unlock my phone but nothing works or its for the wrong version. And we dont have any money to pay someone to do it. Anyone have any tips?
