I can’t restore my iphone 3g 3.0 backup?

Ok so ye... I had a backup of my iphone 2.2.1 and then upgraded to the newest version 3.0... But now everytime i try to restore my backup, itunes simply stops recognizing my phone and I can't restore my phone
