Problem with iphone headphone and its mic?

I used to have calls thru my regular headphones and speak thru the iPhone mic but now it doesn't work and the person on the other side cant hear me but i can still hear them thru the headset. what happened? was it that i was lucky the first couple of times or something is wrong with the phone? Ps. I made an update to it, but everything else works fine
