Will iPhone/Blackberry from Canada work in India if I get sim card in india or better to rent a phone in india?

I am from Canada and I am travelling to India for 6 months and was wondering if it is better to bring an iPhone or Blackberry from Canada to India or is it better to rent a phone while in India?
