Where is the iphone backup file?

I tried to go back to 3.1.1 by using the "restore" feature in iTunes (on Virutal Windows XP). The phone did not start up after "restore" process. Now all my contacts and pictures are gone. Before the restore I remember clicking on "backup". Does anyone know how I can retrieve these backup information?
