Why doesn’t wifi on my iTouch work?

I don't have wifi at my house to i went to a Starbucks to use their wifi. It said it had wifi on the door, but when i tried to go on the internet it said there was no connection. What was wrong? Also, can you get wifi at home with a regular router that puts internet to another computer in the house??
